Sculpted cakes are fast becoming the go-to for people wanting something that will stand out and be both an attention grabbing centerpiece for the party as well as something their guests will remember and talk about long after the party is over. Is It Cake is a new show pushing the limits of these designs and gathering attention and demand for those throwing parties that want to make a memorable impression on those in attendance.
Making a sculpted cake requires planning as well as working with the proper supports and materials to get these masterpieces to take shape and sometimes make people wonder if it really is cake!
These cakes often have to defy gravity. The bases must be solid and provide the support for these sections.
Carving is done by cutting away sections of cake to start getting the desired shape. It often will be done throughout the creation of the cake
Once the base layer is set the cakes are fitted with supports and boards as needed to allow the design to further take shape
Once the cake is fully stacked and the supports are in lace to maintain structure, a final carve is done to give the cake what will be it's finished shape.
A thin coat of frosting is applied to seal in the cakes moisture and prep the surface for adding any smaller details.
A thicker coat of frosting is added to the cake and any texture or small shape that wasn't acheived with the carving is now added
A cover of fondant is applies if required for the design. This is applied and smoothed to create a surface that takes well to shading and painting.
Once the shape has been achieved the cake starts to take on new life when details and shading are added.
Once the main cake has been completed additional decorations can be added and painted depending on the final design. Once these last details are in place, the cake is complete and ready to be enjoyed!
